EE.UU. roza los 120.000 muertos con COVID-19 y los contagios siguen al alza

Estados Unidos alcanzó este domingo las cifras de 2.278.373 casos confirmados de COVID-19 y de 119.959 fallecidos con la enfermedad, de acuerdo con el recuento independiente de la Universidad Johns Hopkins.

Este balance, a las 20.00 hora local (00.00 GMT del lunes), es de 27.000 contagios más que el sábado y de 304 nuevas muertes.

Tras dos días consecutivos con más de 30.000 nuevos casos diarios, la cifra se redujo ligeramente el domingo.

El repunte de contagios en estados como California (con 4.515 más) Florida (4.049 más), Texas ( 4.430 más) o Arizona (3.109 más) ha vuelto a disparar el cómputo global.

Y es que el foco de la pandemia en Estados Unidos se ha desplazado ahora de la golpeada Costa Este a los estados del Cinturón del Sol, como California, Florida, Texas y Arizona, que suman entre los cuatro casi la mitad de nuevos casos en todo el país.

Nueva York, donde la epidemia parece ya controlada, se mantiene como el estado más golpeado en EE.UU. por la pandemia, con casi 400.000 casos confirmados y 31.083 fallecidos, una cifra solo por debajo de las de Brasil, el Reino Unido e Italia.

Tan solo en la ciudad de Nueva York han muerto más de 22.000 personas.

El balance provisional de fallecidos -119.959- ha superado ya la cota más baja de las estimaciones iniciales de la Casa Blanca, que proyectó en el mejor de los casos entre 100.000 y 240.000 muertes a causa de la pandemia.

El presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, rebajó esas estimaciones y se mostró confiado en que la cifra final estaría más bien entre los 50.000 y los 60.000 fallecidos, aunque en sus últimos cálculos auguró ya hasta 110.000 muertos, un número que también se ha superado.

Por su parte, el Instituto de Métricas y Evaluaciones de Salud (IHME) de la Universidad de Washington, en cuyos modelos de predicción de la evolución de la pandemia se fija a menudo la Casa Blanca, calcula que Estados Unidos llegará al mes de octubre habiendo superado los 200.000 muertos. EFE
